New! The best design in Redcar and Cleveland
Three projects have won awards in Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's second Design Awards scheme, with three commended. The award winners include the extension to Guisborough Hall, a private house in Loftus and the conversion of 17th century almshouses in Kirkleatham.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council are one of the growing number of councils who run their own Awards scheme for good design. This is the second biennial scheme run by R&C. Roger Higgins the Council's Urban Design Officer who runs the scheme says 'Good design in public places contributes to everyone's quality of life and helps to make places that people want to live in, work in and visit. These projects challenge other developers to think more imaginatively about their schemes and to produce projects which make the Borough a better and more attractive place to live.
The three winners are -
Extension to Guisborough Hall for Guisborough Hotels Ltd by Howarth Litchfield Partnership. A substantial addition to the hall to enable the development of a high quality hotel.
A new house for Maria Mountain at Whitecliff, Loftus, designed by Maria Mountain and realised with the help of Edgar Allen Associates. The judges praised the house as 'a visionary building‚ responding directly to the sustainability challenge'.
The conversion of Sir William Turner's Almshouses and Kirkleatham for the Trustees and Tees Valley Housing Group by Architects Design Group. By combining two units into one this enables the retention of this listing building to provide housing at a modern standard.
The commended schemes were
Northumbria Water Pumping Station at Skinningrove
Infill terrace housing at Windsor Road, Saltburn.
The Lakes SureStart at Redcar.
A travelling exhibition of all six schemes will be touring the Borough's libraries in 2005. The Council's web site now has full details of the Awards.
