The architectural and community heritage of the Byker Estate in Newcastle is to be collated and celebrated following a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £75,000 announced today.  The grant to Northern Architecture is to deliver a community project in the Byker Estate to enable the residents to establish a Byker archive, an exhibition and visitor and ‘living on the estate’ guides.

Northern Architecture will work with residents to establish a new community group to deliver the project that will include a programme of activities for residents, such as photography and film making workshops and training in archiving and cataloguing provided by Newcastle City Library Service.  The group will establish a heritage and community archive featuring design and architectural items along with personal memorabilia, photographs and newly produced videos and oral recordings of what it is like to live in the Byker Estate.  Items from the archive will then be exhibited in a new Byker Visitors Centre for residents and visitors to find out more about the development of and life in, the estate.  Finally, the group will produce a residents guide and a visitors walking guide to Byker.

Carol Botten, Director at Northern Architecture said:

“The Byker Estate is one of the North East’s finest architectural treasures and we are delighted that this grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund will enable us to work with residents from the estate to discover more and celebrate this unique heritage along with offering them creative activities and skills training.  The estate attracts hundreds of visitors every year and the project will create resources such as the archive, exhibition and guides that will provide information for visitors and residents alike.”

As one of the Erskine team of architects who worked on Byker could I be allowed to point out that the Byker Wall is only a small part of the whole Byker Estate, it is not called the Byker Wall Estate!

Great that you have got the funding though, I look forward to seeing ongoing progress.
