Northern Architecture has recently been commission by Durham County Council to deliver two introductory training sessions on the Building for Life toolkit and assessment criteria.

Building for Life is the national standard for well-designed homes and neighbourhoods developed by CABE and the Home Builders Federation with Design for Homes.

The Building for Life criteria are a series of 20 questions which are used to evaluate the quality of new housing developments. Over 200 local authority officers across the UK have been trained to use the 20 questions in the planning process.

The two sessions for Durham County Council will be delivered to approximately 80 members of staff across the planning, development management, highways and regeneration teams and will introduce Building for Life, the 20 criteria, the possible applications for Building for Life as an assessment tool and basis for constructive discussions with developers and give attendees an opportunity to apply the criteria to some case study examples.

Stuart Timmiss, Head of Planning and Asset said, “This is part of our commitment and drive to improve design quality across the county, working with developers to create new good quality housing developments to serve the needs of our communities and create great places in which to live.”

The training will be delivered by Colin Haylock from our Expert Panel.  Colin is an accredited Building for Life assessor and trainer, and a Design Council CABE Enabler.
