North East Design and Historic Environment Champions - Who they are, what they do

One NorthEast and English Heritage have agreed new 2-year funding in support of the Design and Historic Environment Champions in the 25 local authorities in the North East. These champions are officers and councillors whose role is to campaign for high quality design and the proper care of the historic environment across all the functions of their authority, in any way in which they are able to influence. Support for these champions will be provided through a programme developed for the Champions Club by Northern Architecture, working in partnership with the North of England Civic Trust.
Following the commitment by the Prime Minister and by Government Departments to the importance of high quality design, the appointment of Design Champions in local authorities in the North East was pioneered in 2004 by Northern Architecture and CABE, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, the Government’s Adviser on architecture, urban design and public space. In 2006 Historic Environment Champions were first appointed and 2006/7 is the first year in which Champions have been supported by English Heritage in the North East.
The target is for at least one officer and member champion in each local authority. Some champions combine the roles of both championing design and the historic environment. The number of full champions in the North East now stands at 71. In some cases champions also have active deputies.
