Northern Architecture are offering 3 workshop sessions for people who live, work or play in the Ouseburn, to equip them to assess and comment on building developments seeking planning permission to build in the Ouseburn.

The sessions will bring together a group of people who can form a neighbourhood forum, a legally recognised independent group, who would be routinely consulted about all planning applications in the Ouseburn area.

The sessions will look at identifying what development is welcome in the area and what design standards the community expect of new buildings. Under the guidance of the group, Northern Architecture will produce an assessment toolkit for the group to use when assessing future planning applications.

Session details

Session 3 gave the group the opportunity to assess an emerging scheme design using the design and development criteria established in previous sessions. The group received a presentation from David Roberts from Igloo Regeneration and their architect Robert Sakula from Ash Sakula and they then worked in groups to discuss the scheme against the design and development criteria before feeding back to each other and to David and Robert.

Feedback

"The project has clearly demonstrated the utility of incorporating local stakeholders in terms of enhancing project design and governance and challenging the developer and architect to reflect on areas of the project that would benefit from further consideration; that interested community members can readily be trained and educated to apply principles of good design in urban renewal projects  and has inspired a real community feel in attendees, brought previously unknown individuals and groups together, and empowered Ouseburn stakeholders with impacting upon future development of their local environment."      Kirk Thompson, project participant

"An acceptance for and the success of regeneration projects requires meaningful engagement with stakeholders and communities of interest. It is our experience that good early dialogue will help shape distinctive projects and maximise their contribution to regeneration. The workshops delivered by Northern Architecture’s “Designing Ouseburn’s Future” project have been successful in engaging stakeholders in a way that is informing our design for Ouseburn Mouth regeneration sites. The structure of the workshops around clearly written elements for enquiry has also enabled us to to engage with potential future occupiers on real-life issues and specific design aspects. I believe that Northern Architecture’s work has been of significant help to us and the community in laying a firm foundation on which to build our working relationship over the coming years."   David Roberts  igloo regeneration

"It was great to be able to have a dialogue with so many from what is clearly an engaged and knowledgeable local community. I learnt a lot, and this will feed into the design of the project as it further develops."   Robert Sakula, Ash Sakula Architects
