Regional Education Networking Seminars
Tyne & Wear
March 2004 and 2005
Two regional networking seminars have been held as part of a national series funded by CABE Education in partnership with architecture centres across England.
March 2004 - Developing an Urban Design Education Toolkit for the North East
Held within the diverse urban landscape of Wallsend, the seminar addressed issues of listening to and involving young people in changes in their local urban areas. A series of mini activities and workshops supported the keynote speakers. Helen Woolley, from Sheffield University’s Landscape Department, presented ways of working with young people to learn how they use and feel about spaces. Adrian Stewart, Chris Stewart Architects, showed his inspirational projects in which young people have transformed spaces in their local area using techniques that they can control, such as light, projections, sound and temporary shelters.
March 2005 - Developing Opportunities for Young People to Shape their Built Environment
Held in the Lightfoot Centre, Walker, the afternoon event heard from Jane Gill, Youth Development Officer of The Neighbourhood Initiatives Foundation, and from Pippa Gueterbock an architect with Fluid. Opportunities for delegates to share ideas and learn from each other were included in the programme.
Delegates attended from a range of education and built environment professions, making the events lively and successful. Feedback for the events have been positive, with people suggesting ways Northern Architecture can support their work and young people’s development.
I found the presentations in the morning most inspiring in terms of ideas.
