Participatory Play
Chillingham Road Primary School, Newcastle upon Tyne
April 2005

During the Easter holidays Chillingham Road Primary School's Headteacher invited interested children and parents to spend an afternoon in a Northern Architecture devised participatory playground design workshop. A landscape architect from Colour Urban Design and a landscape architecture student made up the team of deliverers.
A variety of activities took place. Initially participants colour-coded the playground with big sheets of paper. They then made a giant tetrahedron on site, made drawings of their ideal playground and worked on site to build some of those structures and places out of junk material provided - bottle crates, tubes, fabric. Finally, they chalked markings onto the ground to connect 'zones'. The Headteacher will now use this documentation to support a funding application to develop the playground.
