"ArchiTEXTS" - opportunity for writers
As part of our Schools Workshop Programme, Northern Architecture would like to invite North East writers to deliver ArchiTEXTS creative writing workshops with key stage 2 & 3 pupils.
The ArchiTEXTS workshops will run until July 2009 and are designed to encourage young people to respond to buildings, places and spaces through the written word. The workshop will involve a site visit and follow up work during a full school day.
A similar workshop took place in March 2008, when writer Maureen Almond and architectural assistant, Emma Ramsbottom took part in the Space Explorers project with Year 3 pupils from West Walker Primary School.
These pupils visited an old Wesleyan Church, which later became a community centre known as the ‘Wesley Bingo’. Pupils could not get inside the building, but examined its exterior, explored its fabric and imagined what was inside. The pupil’s responses to that particular building resulted in an anthology of haiku, cinquains and several short poems entitled “The Wesley Bingo”.
